My Journal on Ethics and Values

I did a great job in discovering about Ethics and Values in one of my teaching delievery where I was teaching year level 7 Green, Animarao Jss. During my lesson delivery I tried to model strong character traits, including honest, respect, repect and fairness in order to achieve the indicators of Ethics and Values for my students. Teachers have a responsibility to each student, without any preference, prejudice, or partiality, treat them with care and respect (PGU, T. (2022).

Firstly, our class started at 8:30 am and I presented at 8:25 which is five minutes earlier. It is for me to show punctuality which is the first most important part of Ethics and values. Students were very happy to see me coming early before their class and I was also very happy to show punctuality so that my students will also do the same good behavior. I felt serious to my job and also felt confident because I was aware of any issues from my students and was ready to find solutions because of coming on time. For example; when I came in my some of my students weren't ready with having pens to write with so I had to find spare pens for them to borrow and return before starting our lesson.

secondly, I apply Ethics and values by telling the truths to students. For example: I provided a quiz at the end of our lesson and and tells the truth to students that I will return their quiz papers tomorrow. I even was being honest to them by saying that I will give feedbacks on their activities which I did that and students were very happy to receive their feedbacks on time and knows their errors and what to improve in their activities.

furthermore, at the beginning of our class we made a rule that all should completed their given tasks. However, I saw that at the end of the class there were many of the students who did not completed their individual activity while some completed on time their task. This was a call for me to apply equal treatments among my students because I saw that some students obeyed but some did not. In order for me to fair I let my students who completed their tasks to go out and for those who did not complete their tasks to stay behind and completed the task.

In my lesson plan, I included reminders of Ethics and values for me to carry out my lesson and remember what I should for delivering Ethics and values in my lesson.

My Journal on Effective communication

I did my competency on Effective communication when I taught year level 7 Brown. It was amazing for me to carry out a lesson which is focus on indicators of effective communication because I learned many things about effective communication after the delivery of my lesson. Before, I taught that verbal is the only way or method of delivering effective communication, however, I now realized that non-verbal is also part of effective communication, such as: ensuring that the signals you giving out through your body language are positive, confident, and engaging. For example: In my lesson delivery I used effective communication through eye contect with students when talking to them, it shows that I was supportive and attentive to students who needed help.

As part of effective communication I did not stand in front of the class but was walking around, facilitating, communicating and supporting students to encourage and helped them in their given activities refer to appendix 1 to see how I facilitated and encourage students through effective communication. I belived that faciliating students is part of effective communication because students are encouraged to speak and share their problems when the teacher is being supportive and attentive to the students whenever they need assistances.

I found out the impact of effective communication which is increased positive relationships between teachers and students. According to the study by (Shan, S., Li., Shi, J., Wang (2014)) it investigates how a happy classroom climate is accomblished through sharing effective communication between students and teachers affect learning performances. The study reports that through effective communication students are more interested and excited about learning and likely to perform better academically when teachers develop a sense of community, respond to students, and foster positive relationships. In my teaching delievery I witnessed that using effective communication increased students performances because those students were all doing their given activities and were interested to take parts in their lesson. During that day students were all engaged and showed a lot of interests in wanting to take parts. The implementation of effective communication worked very well in supporting students to reach good performances in their lessons and activities.  Refer to appendix 2 to see some of the engagement pictures of my students in their lessons.

I created a lesson plan on effective communication where I included to remind myself to give positive feedback and to encourage teamworks. In my lesson plan I used collaborative work because it increases teamworks between students and helps students to communicate and work togther through helping each others in their given activities. Refer to appendix 3 to see a snap picture of my lesson plan on effective communication and how I used the two indicators (positive feed back and encourage teamworks) of effective communication. I believed that giving positive feedback to the learners is part of effective communication because by doing that students felt safe and encourage to repeat doing the good things when they received positive reinforcements from the teacher. For example: I used positive words when praising students "well done!" "very good!" "excellent!" and I even announced the names of students who were doing create things in their lessons to embrace them. At the end of my lesson delievery I received a feedback from my associate teacher who observed me in my lesson delievery and was glad that I did some of the indicators of effective communication which helped me in creating a positive learning environment. Refer to appendix 4 to see my feedback form received from my associate teacher.

My Reflection on Classroom Management

I had one of my lesson deliveries teaching year 7 Gold, and I implemented classroom managements in some of teaching strategies. It was a worthwhile lesson filled with engagement and activeness because classroom management really helped in managing the students to be well organized and pay attention during our lesson. I have never imagined the importance of classroom management in helping me in many ways which makes me really happy. It was a great journey for me to witness how important classroom management was and I made up my idea to keep practicing it in every day through out my lesson deliveries.

First of all, as part of classroom management I used the organization of teaching aids and students activities corners in my classroom. For instance, refer to appendix 1 to see some evidences of how I organized my teaching aids and students works corners. After creating these corners, I realized that I have established and sustain an orderly learning environment for my students. I could see there were few number of student walking around in wrong directions because the corners were orderly for them to know exactly where to go. I also learned that applying classroom management promote active learning in the classroom because students are well disciplined with the rules that they have to follow. I saw that most of my students were active in their learning because they have rules to follow and were aware of the consequences when not following the class rules. For example: I created a time out corner, red card warning and some rules for students to follow refer to appendix 2 to see the evidences. I used class rules to decrease negative behaviors of my students and it was successful in making my students obey and show good manners. For instance: I display a paper on the wall which consists of some rules and small punishments that will be applied to those students not following the rules. I gave students a red card as a warning for not following the rules and will send them to sit at the time out corner when repeating or making another mistake. I learned that corporal punishment was not entertained in my class because of applying such classroom management of building rules and small punishments for students.

In my classroom I created an empty box as a rubbish bin for students to use when throwing rubbish refer to appendix 3. I believe that building a clean environment is part of classroom management because it helps class rules and different corners to be stand out when the environment is clean and not messy. I even applied classroom management by using steps or instructions for students activities. One of my activity was new for students to carry out which was known as a fishbone activity so I know that there will be a lot of questions coming from students on how to carry out the activity. Thus, I make an instruction or step on how to carry out the activity and pasted on the board for students to look at and helped them in knowing what to do. Refer to appendix 4 to view the fishbone activity instructions or steps of carrying out the new activity. In my lesson plan I mentioned about how I applied the fishbone activity as part of classroom management refer to appendix 5 to view the part of my lesson plan. At the end of my session I received a feedback from my associate teacher refer to appendix 6 to see my feedback on classroom management.

My new reflection on Alternative Curriculum

On Monday 4th July, 2020 I was very excited to join an alternative curriculum which was the school function (Cultural day). During that time, we did a lot of thing with our teams that we were distributed to control. I was in the White team with four other teachers. The cultural day was very fun and children really enjoyed being in that school function. There were also a lot of parents attending that school function because they came to cheer and give foods for their children. Traditional foods in all different kinds were brought by parents and students and also a lot of games that took place in that event. Refer to appendix 1 to see the images of cultural foods that the white team students brought during that time.

The event was an example of alternative curriculum because it is a school function which was added to the school days for students to enjoy the event. The event took place in the school field it was not carried out inside the classroom. Refer to appendix 2 to see the setting of the event. I realized that alternative curriculum is all about making new experiences for students and that include in taking students outside of the classroom into a new environment. Refer to appendix 3 to see students participating in traditional games which were conducted outside of the usual classroom.

Another alternative curriculum which I have implemented in my lesson delivery was an outdoor education. I carried out that lesson outside of the usual learning environment (classroom) and I let students to carry out that lesson in the field. We had a Physical Education and I taught students to practice new skills and safeties when running in the fields.  It was a fun and enjoyable lesson because most students especially students who lack interest in learning inside the classroom were all engaged and want to learn because of the new setting of the learning environment. refer to appendix 4 to see pictures of me and my students playing in the field doing our PE lesson in alternative curriculum.

My Reflection on Lesson planning

I carried out a Moral Education lesson delivery at Animmwarao JSS for year 7 Students. Part of my preparation for that lesson delivery was to create my own scheme of work and lesson plan. It was a bit hard for me to create my own scheme of work because I had to work with the syllabus or curriculum, and those were new for me to do. I am not familiar with creating my learning outcomes for my scheme of work and am unable to unpack my learning outcomes for my lesson plan. However, I had to seek help from other teachers who are more familiar with these. Refer to Appendix 1 to see the syllabus, teacher’s guide which I used when creating my Moral Education scheme of work, and lesson plan.  After accomplishing my scheme of work and lesson plan I learned ways how to use the syllabus to choose learning outcomes for the weeks and days of my scheme of work. I realized that Bloom’s taxonomy table was helpful in unpacking my lesson objectives refer to Appendix 2 to see Bloom’s taxonomy table that I applied in unpacking my lesson objectives.

In my lesson plan, I include a plan for using affordable and available resources refer to Appendix 3 to see the teaching aids that I used during my lesson delivery. It was fun for me to create teaching resources that are affordable and available because that is part of being a creative teacher to the students. I noticed that when using those kinds of resources my students were very interested in the lesson and they stayed in class until it was over. My teacher gave me feedback refers to Appendix 4 and we managed to have a small conversation where she told me about some interventions on how to overcome weaknesses that I encountered during my lesson delivery. My associate teacher told me that I need to create more group work activities and marking rubrics for students to use in that session. I learned from my mistakes and also feel grateful for some strength that I get from my lesson delivery.

Also, in my lesson plan, I included strategies that will allow students in my class to ask plenty of questions. I was kind of having inquiry-based teaching. I saw that the lesson plan I used was successful in making students ask different questions related to the topic that we discussed during that day. I used the KWL chart, and it was interesting for the students. Firstly, I write the topic on the board and students read the topic (Discrimination and violence against women). Then after that, I told them "What do you want to know about this topic?" a lot of students gave me answers such as I want to know the meaning of discrimination and violence. I want to know why violence is a problem for our women. I want to know the impacts of violence; I want to know how to stop violations and discrimination. There were lots of questions that my students want to know and for me to make sure that I answer their questions, I recorded their questions by writing those questions that they gave me under the K on the KWL chart. We were having a class filled with inquiries and those inquiries from the students makes them explore their lesson by questioning and then finding lots of answers to their questions.

My reflection on Effective teaching

I had a wonderful class when include effective teaching in my lesson delivery. After I delivered my lesson, I felt that effective teaching was important because it provide students with the knowledge that education is accessible to everyone. It encourages my students to become active learners and most importantly my students had the chance to bring their own experiences to what we discussed during our lesson.  During that time, I was teaching social science to Year 7 students at BTC JSS and effective teaching allow my students to share more ideas and interact with their peers in discussing different opinions.

Firstly, I created a lesson plan and in my lesson plan, I choose a debate activity for my students to carry out as an interactive activity. Our topic was gender equality and students have to debate the idea “Gender equality is not a good thing” Refer to Appendix 1 to see the teaching aids that I used for that debate activity. I distributed students to work in two groups, the first group they were the supporters, and the second groups were the opposition side. But, first, before they carry out the debate they will work in their groups and list down their ideas why they support or are against the idea. It was an interactive and effective activity because students worked together to share ideas and participated in debating their views on why they supported or against the given statement or idea refer to Appendix 2 to see how students interact in that debate activity.

At the end of the lesson my teacher gave me feedback on effective teaching, and I was very glad to receive it because most of its indicators were accomplished in my lesson. I was also given some ways to improve my effective teaching which was on asking more questions and giving students the chance to express their views in class. I had to use more questions and give more tasks for students to have the chance to speak and express ideas during class.
